Truth and Myths about Food Supplements

People have different point of views about Food Supplements.
Some believe that dietary supplements are unnecessary because any individual can obtain all necessary vitamins and minerals from healthy diet.
Some said that we still need them even though we have healthy eating habit.

So which ones are the fact and which ones are the myths ?

Myth 1 : Most people Need To Take Supplements
Truth : The nutritionist or health practitioners agree that main source of energy, vitamin and minerals for our body comes from the food. We can get all the needs from healthy diet, whole food, well - balance and variation of diet menu.
However, there are cases that by the food alone, we still have deficiency.
Not all people like to eat fish, not all people love dairy products, not all people love vegetables.
These when food supplements are needed to fill in those gaps

Myth 2 : More Supplements Are Better
Truth : Too much are not always good things. Toxicity still can occur in water-soluble, fat-soluble vitamins and minerals.
For eg, too much Vitamin C can trigger stomachache and diarrhoea.
How much do we need is different from each individual, therefore consulting the health practitioner is recommended. Typically, patients don't require taking any more than the recommended daily amount of nutrient, unless for certain cases such as pregnant women.

Myth 3 : Supplements Always Contain What the Label Says
Truth : A supplement can claim it contains 100 % of our RDA needs or said that the source is organic plantation etc, but in fact it can contain as little as 10% or the "organic" plantation is only part of the whole farm.
Therefore when choosing supplements, we always need to do thorough researches from reliable sources.

Myth 4 : Supplements always Do What They Always Do
Truth : Supplements can improve health in those with deficiencies but not every available supplement carries the benefits it claims.
Dietary supplements are only filling the gap or helping to boost immune system, but they cannot treat or prevent diseases.

Myth 5 : By Eating Supplement, I don't Need to Restrict with My Diet
Truth : Supplement is a supplement, it's not a replacement of whole food
Therefore to achieve optimal health, we still need to have healthy eating diet.
